ABOUT US
Literacy Lighthouse was established as a Tennessee Nonprofit Corporation to support the family as a whole through educational venues that support family values, educational advancement, personal empowerment and awareness. In fulfillment of our exempt purposes, we plan to incorporate a number of activities into our programming.
We plan to teach and tutor families for enrichment in education and valuing each member as a valuable member of the family. Each person is taught the importance of being a part of the family and how they can contribute to the family.
We will have outings to local educational facilities. We have online educational programs for adults and children, as well as reading programs that assist young and old with comprehension of materials. We partner with local literacy programs to increase the reading skills of or communities.
Students in grades K-12 are assisted with homework assignments from school and educated on how they can be a better student during school. Adult participants are tutored for GED/HiSED to receive their diploma or to continue/further their education with assistance through our Adult Continuing Education courses.
We also hope to establish a food bank and clothing closet for participants in the near future.

Joyce Turnage-Counce is the Founder and Director of Admissions for Literacy Lighthouse in Memphis, Tennessee. As Founder, she is responsible for creating connections and possibilities to bring educational opportunities to lower income communities which in turn will increase the educational probabilities for families to gain access to training, jobs and a better lifestyle for individuals and their family.
As Director of Admissions, she uses her master’s degree in Educational Assessment and Evaluation which allows her the opportunity to create programs that fit the community’s learning capabilities.
Joyce Turnage-Counce has a dual Master’s degree specializing in Leadership of Educational Organization and Educational Assessment and Evaluation; she also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration from American InterContinental University.
Ms. Counce continues her education whenever possible she has recently completed two courses of Tutorial Training.
She is a member of the International Association of Women and a member of The National Tutoring Associatio.
Hello,
my name is D. Wright, I have volunteered with Literacy Lighthouse for about two years. I feel that Literacy Lighthouse gives extra help and second chances with education. Literacy Lighthouse helped me learn how to work with others.
I will be attending STCC this fall to get my Associates degree in Business Administration, I plan to become a fashion stylist and creator of many things; I have already learned to make things such as Diaper Cakes, corsages, cakes, clothes, dance costumes and also redecorate things to make them better, "Styled by Dee" is my business name. I am thankful to Literacy Lighthouse and Joyce Counce for giving me opportunities when no one else would. May 2017
